What Are Safety Critical Medicals, Fit-For-Work Medicals
Several industries require workers to have a medical assessment prior to them starting work on a particular site or role, including construction and rail, as well as drivers and those working at height.
Depending on the role and the safety implications, more in depth and specific testing is sometimes required.
Safety Critical Medicals
These are medicals which are required for individuals undertaking a role that puts themselves and/or others at high risk of injury or ill health. For example, working at height or driving a heavy goods vehicle. There are clear pass/fail criteria and only if all elements are passed, will the individual be deemed fit to undertake that role. A certificate proving their fitness or failing their medical will be given.
Fit For Work/Task Medical and
Pre-Placement Health Screening
These medicals are designed to assess if an individual is fit enough to undertake a particular task or job role. Whether they are just joining a company, there role has changed or that their health has changed, and the employer needs to understand if they can still safely and effectively undertake their role.
Personal Track Safety (PTS) Medicals
Are medicals designed to assess an individual’s fitness to work in the rail environment which carries significant risk. These have clear pass/fail criterial and only when cleared can an individual work in that environment.
